New additions to the Garden

Gardening is fun!  Most of the broccoli and cauliflower was harvested just before Christmas.  Last week we harvested the second broccoli plant and made a stir fry dish with it.  Did you know that you can eat the stem and leaves of the broccoli plant?  And they are very good for you, too!  The spinach has been harvested twice now.  (Who knew it would grow back a second time?)  The swiss chard and lettuce continue to grow and we happily continue to use it.  But, there were some holes left where our broccoli and cauliflower were, so back to the nursery we went.  Here is what our garden looks like now:

My husband is much more adventuresome than I (for which I am thankful) and decided it was time to try to grow some veggies from seeds.  He chose tomato and cucumber seeds and put them in here to get them started -

Next, we saw a wide variety of onion plants waiting to be purchased and planted.  We opted to try some red onions and here are they, newly planted in the ground and being watered.
Lastly, we decided to add some fresh herbs to our garden.  We now have some fresh parsley, thyme, and cilantro.

We also bought one new lettuce plant as two that we have are starting to flower and won't be much use to us soon.  Oh, and in case you are wondering, the not so glamorous bricks and sticks in the ground are there for the nights when the temperature is below freezing and we need to cover our plants.  We're working on getting some fruit trees in the backyard so stay posted for that in the next couple of weeks (we hope)!
